Flexion of the poll

Jean Luc Cornille

The flexion of the poll is part of the elasticity of the vertebral column. However, the flexion of the poll should not be create acting on the poll. It is a forward phenomenon starting with the propulsive activity of the hind legs. The initial thrust travels forward through the thoracolumbar spine where it is converted by the muscular system into horizontal forces and upward forces. When the muscular system is properly developed and educated, the load on the forelegs is within the range of the forelegs’ propulsive capacities allowing the extrinsic muscles of the forelegs to carry the trunk between the forelegs and propel the body upward. The principle muscles involved are the serratus ventralis system, dorsalis and cervicis, and lower, the pectoralus sytem.

As the trunk elevates between the forelegs the lower cervical vertebrae lift pushing the upper cervical vertebrae forward toward the vertical of the head.

By contrast, if the flexion of the poll is asked at the level of the poll, flexion, traction, restriction, the backward force or restriction opposes the thrust coming from the thoracolumbar spine inducing lowering the lower loop of the cervical vertebrae.

The system is shown on the brief video.
